Dharma
by Billy Collins

The way the dog trots out the front door
every morning
without a hat or an umbrella,
without any money
or the keys to her doghouse
never fails to fill the saucer of my heart
with milky admiration.

Who provides a finer example
of a life without encumbrance -
Thoreau in his curtainless hut
with a single plate, a single spoon?
Gandhi with his staff and his holy diapers?

Off she goes into the material world
with nothing but her brown coat
and her modest blue collar,
following only her wet nose,
the twin portals of her steady breathing,
followed only by the plume of her tail.

If only she did not shove the cat aside
every morning
and eat all his food
what a model of self-containment she would be,
what a paragon of earthly detachment.
If only she were not so eager
for a rub behind the ears,
so acrobatic in her welcomes,
if only I were not her god.

I saw the band, I think, in 1974. One of the best concerts ever.

Orange Crush by R.E.M.

Post by Tomas »

.

Follow me, don't follow me
I've got my spine, I've got my orange crush
Collar me, don't collar me
I've got my spine, I've got my orange crush
We are agents of the free
I've had my fun and now it's time to
Serve your conscience overseas
(Over me, not over me)
Comin' in fast, over me

Follow me, don't follow me
I've got my spine, I've got my orange crush
Collar me, don't collar me
I've got my spine, I've got my orange crush
We are agents of the free
I've had my fun and now it's time to
Serve your conscience overseas
(Over me, not over me)
Comin' in fast, over me

High on the roof
Thin the blood
Another one came on the waves tonight
Comin' in, you hope

(We'd circle and we'd circle to stop and consider and
Centered on the pavement stacked up all the trucks jacked up and
Our wheels in slush and orange crush in pocket and all this here county
Hell any county it's just like Heaven here and I was remembering and I
Was just in a different county and all then this whirlybird that I
Headed for I had my goggles pulled off I knew it all I knew every back
Road and every truck stop)

Follow me, don't follow me
I've got my spine, I've got my orange crush
Collar me, don't collar me
I've got my spine, I've got my orange crush
We are agents of the free
I've had my fun and now it's time to
Serve your conscience overseas
(Over me, not over me)
Comin' in fast, over me

High on the booze
In a tent
Paved with blood
Nine-inch howl
Brave the night
Chopper comin' in, you hope

High on the roof
Thin the blood
Another one came on the waves tonight
Comin' in, you hope

Child Development
by Billy Collins

As sure as prehistoric fish grew legs
and sauntered off the beaches into forests
working up some irregular verbs for their
first conversation, so three-year-old children
enter the phase of name-calling.

Every day a new one arrives and is added
to the repertoire. You Dumb Goopyhead,
You Big Sewerface, You Poop-on-the-Floor
(a kind of Navaho ring to that one)
they yell from knee level, their little mugs
flushed with challenge.
Nothing Samuel Johnson would bother tossing out
in a pub, but then the toddlers are not trying
to devastate some fatuous Enlightenment hack.

They are just tormenting their fellow squirts
or going after the attention of the giants
way up there with their cocktails and bad breath
talking baritone nonsense to other giants,
waiting to call them names after thanking
them for the lovely party and hearing the door close.

The mature save their hothead invective
for things: an errant hammer, tire chains,
or receding trains missed by seconds,
though they know in their adult hearts,
even as they threaten to banish Timmy to bed
for his appalling behavior,
that their bosses are Big Fatty Stupids,
their wives are Dopey Dopeheads
and that they themselves are Mr. Sillypants.

Surely someone here will get this:

"Flowers for Charles Gordon"

(April 30)

I only sought to help
but you scorned me

I did not ask for them
these gifts of mine
I never used them
these gifts of mine
to rule you, to hurt you
to beat you at your game

I only wanted to help
but you scorned me

You hate me, you kick me,
you banish me. Why?

These gifts of mine?

Lost, I sought answers
and at last them did find
with these gifts of mind
But you will not hear me
Why?

These gifts of mine!

I only wanted to help
but you scorned me

And so now I lay
these flowers for Charles
and take my leave of you
With these gifts of mine

No one is scorning you, you are only being defensive and taking speculation as insult, that is no ones doing but your own.

You sir, are no genius.

The last line of the post indicates the date it was written.

You obviously don't know "Flowers for Algernon" and you obviously don't understand critical thinking.

Please refrain from responding to any of my posts in the future. I will extend the same courtesy barring any memory lapses.
