Let's see you figure this out!
A man walks into the Doctors office, he points to a photograph on the wall and says to the secretary, brothers and sisters I have none, but, that man's father is my fathers son.
What is the man conveying?

He's his own grandfather.
Re: Let's see you figure this out!
A man walks into the Doctors office, he points to a photograph on the wall and says to the secretary... Why would the doctors office have a photo of this man on the wall?
But if it was his doctor... his nurse... a psych ward... and a mirror... Maybe less durgs is what the man is trying to convey.

You assume the man that's walking into the doctors office is NOT the doctor himself...mistake #1
I pictured myself in the photograph to figure it out.

Think about this carefully, though. When he says "my father's son," he must mean himself, since he has no siblings. So he is saying that man's father is myself. Kunga, you're wrong. Donna, you're wrong too. Sorry. 1456200423 is correct.

But what do the parentheses you added mean? Read the quote carefully. Or Google it, if you don't believe me. "That man's father is my father's son." My Father's son is the same as me (since he has no brothers or sisters it cannot be anyone else.) So he is saying "That man's father is me."
He could only be the doctor if the picture on the wall was of the doctor's son, but that is never stated in the original puzzle. If the picture is of the doctor himself, then the man is saying he is the doctor's father.
Next.
What am I missing?

There's nothing in the original puzzle to indicate who is in the photo. In fact, the one man that the man in the photo could NOT be is the man who comes in to the office. Because the man is saying he is THE FATHER of the man in the photo.
All we know about the person in the photo is that it is a MAN (not a female or child) and that it can't be the guy who walks into the office, because that guy just said that the man in the photo's father is himself ("my father's son.")
So the person in the photo COULD be the doctor, or it could be the doctor's grown son, or anyone else except the man who has just entered the office.
Not trying to drive anyone crazy. For some of us it's not a drive but a putt, anyway. Or at most a chip shot out of the rough.
Re: Let's see you figure this out!
I said that I imagined myself in the photo, to figure it out.cousinbasil wrote:But you aren't saying why it's a photo of himself.
And also said it was a mistake to assume he wasn't the doctor.
What difference does it make (the process of figureing out something), as long as you arrive at the right answer ?
Logic can entail a multitude of scenarios.

Re: Let's see you figure this out!
That's why I couldn't figure out whom you said the picture was of.Kunga wrote:I said that I imagined myself in the photo, to figure it out.
Right. It's a mistake to assume that the man coming in the office is not the doctor. It could be. He just can't be the man in the photo. And also said it was a mistake to assume he wasn't the doctor.
But you didn't arrive at the right answer. That's my whole point. In which case, the process does matter, because it led you to the wrong conclusion. What difference does it make (the process of figureing out something), as long as you arrive at the right answer ?
It can't be a photo of himself. Please tell me you finally understand this. The man coming in the room has identified the man in the photo as his son. Either one could be the doctor - that doesn't matter. The original question is what is the man who enters the room conveying when he says about the man in the picture: "That man's father is my father's son." He is just saying, "That man's father is me."Kunga wrote:it's a photo of himself.
Since he can't be his own father(!), he can't be the man in the photo.
Re: Let's see you figure this out!
CB, you're contradicting yourself when you say that the man in the photo
and then say :cousinbasil wrote:can't be a photo of himself.
and then say:cousinbasil wrote:"That man's father is me."

No I am not contradicting myself. I am trying to explain the answer in different words, but I can see I am just confusing you.Kunga wrote:CB, you're contradicting yourself when you say that the man in the photoand then say :cousinbasil wrote:can't be a photo of himself.and then say:cousinbasil wrote:"That man's father is me.":)cousinbasil wrote:he can't be the man in the photo.
