Idiotic Mottos, Sayings & Quotes

Post by Cory Duchesne »

'In the end, we will regret what we didn't do, not what we did do'.

^

I know a lot of people who like that one, but I find it ridiculous. Why?

Because regretting what you didn't do implies that you are regretting what you did do. Doing nothing is impossible.

When we regret - we are regretting that we did one thing instead of another thing. We regret that we did inferior things instead of more superior things.

I recall Jim Morrison said something like, "There were some good times, but if I could go back an do things differently, I'd live a private life, plodding in the garden of my art - quietly" Morrison was a pretty miserable guy when he wasn't ecstatically generating a frenzied mob of mindless human activity. In another one of his last statements, he said something about how he was a fake hero. It's true, he was. That's why I like Jim Morrison, because he wasn't in denial of his weakness, he wasn't proud. I think he seen the worthlessness and meaninglessness of his debauchery and narcissism - and couldn't live with himself.

Soren Kierkegaard hit the nail on the head when he said:

"My honest opinion and my friendly advice is this: do it or do not do it - you will regret both."

Well, it is erroneous in that a lot of people do regret what they have done.
Because regretting what you didn't do implies that you are regretting what you did do.
True.
Soren Kierkegaard hit the nail on the head when he said:

"My honest opinion and my friendly advice is this: do it or do not do it - you will regret both."
More correctly, you will regret either.

However, regret is not mandatory, so his saying is also idiotic.

Did he regret saying that? I doubt it.

Here's a saying, or at least commonly used phrase that is idiotic:

"Please don't hesitate to call."

According to how the brain works, the subliminal message received here is two negatives; first, "don't call," and second, "please hesitate."

Yet I hear this often in the business world in which I work.

Better to simply say, "Please call."

Here's an ever popular saying:

Life is so intolerable that we need our illusions to survive.

What's so horribly humorous about this saying is that the "life" referred to as being "intolerable" is thus so entirely due to the illusions being clung to.

Don’t worry, be happy.

Its probably more appriopiate to say “Don’t worry, be nothing”

Here’s another absurd one from - The Wedding Singer

You know there’s trouble when your entire life philosophy is printed on a T-shirt.

"Money can't buy happiness."

Some might beg to differ.

“Whoever said money can't buy happiness simply didn't know where to go shopping.” - Bo Derek

"Money can't buy you happiness, but it can buy you a yacht big enough to pull up right alongside it.” - David Lee Roth

These quotes by Dan Quayle are highly memorable in their stupidity.

"If we don't succeed, we run the risk of failure."

"One word sums up probably the responsibility of any vice president, and that one word is 'to be prepared.'"

"Mars is essentially in the same orbit . . . Mars is somewhat the same distance from the Sun, which is very important. We have seen pictures where there are canals, we believe, and water. If there is water, that means there is oxygen. If oxygen, that means we can breathe."

"I believe we are on an irreversible trend toward more freedom and democracy -- but that could change."

"I have made good judgments in the past. I have made good judgments in the future."

"The future will be better tomorrow."

"We're going to have the best-educated American people in the world."

"People that are really very weird can get into sensitive positions and have a tremendous impact on history."

"I am not part of the problem. I am a Republican."

"A low voter turnout is an indication of fewer people going to the polls."

"When I have been asked during these last weeks who caused the riots and the killing in L.A., my answer has been direct and simple: Who is to blame for the riots? The rioters are to blame. Who is to blame for the killings? The killers are to blame."

"Illegitimacy is something we should talk about in terms of not having it."

"For NASA, space is still a high priority."

"Quite frankly, teachers are the only profession that teach our children."

"It isn't pollution that's harming the environment. It's the impurities in our air and water that are doing it."

"[It's] time for the human race to enter the solar system."

"Verbosity leads to unclear, inarticulate things."

"I stand by all the misstatements that I've made."

Well sometimes it is more torturous to think of all the different things that could have happened if you made a move, so if you remained static you will always wonder what could have been. But if you tried and you failed you at least learned the true nature of your potential. That was probably all the person meant with the quote. It's better to try than not to try at all.

Here's another saying encouraging people to remain insane.

Don’t part with your illusions, when they are gone you may still exist, but you have ceased to live. ~ Mark Twain

What a comforting thought: Lies keep you alive.

To travel hopefully is a better thing than to arrive.

- Robert Louis Stevenson (1850 - 1894)
How much sense does it make to not want to reach the destination you are hoping to reach?
Man's best possession is a sympathetic wife.

- Euripides (484 BC - 406 BC), Antigone
Relying for fortitude on something that most males can't have no matter how badly they seek is very cowardly to say the least.

Probably not strictly on topic, but still:
"I think that the film Clueless was very deep. I think it was deep in the way that it was very light. I think lightness has to come from a very deep place if it's true lightness." - Alicia Silverstone, Actress

"Well, you know what I always say."

My dad used to say that all the time. Now my older brother has started saying, "Well, you know what Dad always says."

Whenever someone tries to justify doing something pointless and retarded by saying:

"It's an ancient Native American tradition."

For one thing, a culture without a written history does not exactly have any ancient traditions; for another, umm... didn't Europeans following "ancient European traditions" have to consciously restrain themselves just to simply not wipe the entire moronic civilization off the face of the planet?

(Ugh, pet peeve. People who are born in Canada have a hard time respecting the greedy "First Nations" kids that try to pretend that they are somehow more native to the land, and are thus entitled to the entire country.)

Cory's above is funny..!

A really stupid license plate I see once and awhile says, “I don’t get mad, I get even”

And I thought to myself, “huh? How do you get revenge on someone without first experiencing the emotions rage and anger?” lol…

That would be like saying, “I don’t stroke my penis, I ejaculate”

I'm with the Celtics on this one, "writing is for the weak of mind".

If their traditions held up without recording, then it's got to be stronger then the our dead written ones.

To have concern and regret for your actions is to cling to the idea that there's something to live for greater then mere existence, or to believe in some karmic law which is in constant tally. Evidence would support karma.

Regretting what you left undone. Is their more to loose through in action, then attempt, or is everything a gamble in this life? Everything good in this world either doesn't last, is bad for you, or takes hard work to obtain,

You act as though Europeans did not have non-written traditions. We most certainly did, and still do. We also have written traditions, because we have invented literature.

Anyway, many "ancient Native American traditions" are shams. They are recent.

My biggest pet peeve is "Live life to it's fullest".

That is the most cliche and empty personal motto I have ever heard especially given the kind of people who usually parrot it.

I'd rather live an entire life in a prison cell than in the way which many people consider to be living life to it's fullest...

People who don't know how to live hide behind their sayings. Those kind of people tend to live in their heads.

Ha, another good one. Moronic to the max.

Everyone knows only written histories imply antiquity!
for another, umm... didn't Europeans following "ancient European traditions" have to consciously restrain themselves just to simply not wipe the entire moronic civilization off the face of the planet?
Yep, a psychotic culture almost wipes out a less technically-based one, but has a moment of conscience at nearly the end of their murdering bloodbath. Obviously it is the nobler and more spiritual one!
