Heinous crime: masculine or feminine?

Post by Leyla Shen »

I caught part of one of those crime shows -- SVU, I think -- last night.

Some guy had been running around torturing women. Locking them up in small dark places and leaving them to die a dreadful, slow death.

Turned out that, as a kid, this guy was afraid of the dark. His mother, being so disappointed in him, used to lock him up in the cupboard, demonstrating absolute disgust over the fact that he soiled himself over such fear.

What piqued my interest particularly was the attitude that this guy was the spawn of some far away evil, despite the advertised fact that he had been the victim of years of this torture as a child that he now practised against others. This disgust was contrasted with nothing less than the most undulating empathy for his victims...

That's a fictional show.

Obviously not everything boils down to masculine or feminine.
