In order to be conscious, you must exist. But conversely if you are no longer conscious (alive) then you cease to exist. But there are those that argue that death takes the perceiver (or the soul, for lack of a better word), enters another realm or dimension or plane of existence, which could arguably be considered another realm of consciousness.

So which came first, the chicken or the egg?

Arek:

You are thinking sloppily!

Consciousness does not have an extra-sensory dimension. The mad do perceive nebulous notions or ideations that somehow they have a pipeline into the timeless realm. Regretfully, there is no coherent, lucid notion of eternity. In our universe, time is an irreversible flow forward. This is the cornerstone of thermodynamics.

In mathematics, physics and cosmology there is reversibility, symmetry and temporal invariance. However, that is an artifact of our equations. These do not capture physical reality in four dimensional spacetime.
