Imagos and Spirituality

The male child is formed to be reliant upon the mother. In contrast to the female who sees herself as her mother. It is this early psychological difference which explains many of the psychological differences existant throughout the developing mind of the male and female sex. The male child learns to idealize his mother in order to develop her ethical standards. In contrast to the female, who is more reliant upon her image of the mother. This may explain why many young females fall into vanity at such a young age, as their mothers appear as an image to their emerging consciousness; which as an image only reflects to their mind a half-formed image of themselves. This disparity between the sexes explains the stigma that as men grow older and separate from the mother, they naturally degenerate morally in order to bond with other males, and develop into whatever society considers to be a man. It may also explain why certain males gravitate towards higher ideals as they develop.

Especially the spiritual, as the spiritual provides a safe return to childhood without compromising a developing manhood. In this instance, what is known as God, is also usually 'Mother or Father,' in accordance to the strength of the bond between earthly mother or father. In the case of Jesus, for example, it can be assumed that he referred to God as 'Heavenly Father' because of his ethical relationship with his mother. He was no longer in need of an ethical referendum from a matriarcal structure, as his bond with Mary was complete. The relationship between Jesus and his earthly parents, serves as a psychological template for the emerging divinity within the spiritual aspirant. Of course each case is its own variant, though the underlying archetype remains.
