"Without Conscience - The Disturbing World...

Post by DivineIntercourse »

...of the Psychopaths Among Us" (By: Robert D. Hare, PhD)

It's an interesting book!

Here's a taste: "He will chose you, disarm you with his words, and control you with his presence. He will delight you with his wit and his plans. He will show you a good time, but you will always get the bill. He will smile and deceive you, and he will scare you with his eyes. And when he is through with you, and he will be through with you, he will desert you and take with him your innocence and your pride. You will be left much sadder but not a lot wiser, and for a long time you will wonder what happened and what you did wrong. And if another of his kind comes knocking at your door, will you open it?" -From an essay signed, "A psychopath in prison."

Not yet, Dan. I'll post my thoughts shortly after I finish reading the book. Originally, I made this thread to see if anyone else had an interest in this topic, and/or would like to post their own pertinent thoughts.

Perhaps it might be a strange topic for these boards, but (for me at least) it's about facing fear head on and understanding something unknown. I don't fully understand why I'm interested in this topic, but it does have a definitive appeal - for some reason (it's strange to me).

Why shouldn't you have started reading that book?

Become schizophrenic, add isolation, a splash of stimulation, sleep deprivation, that book, and you'd be much more likely to understand.

I don't like this place. I seem to always end up here during an episode...

Yes, I suspected something like that. I'm quite experienced with paranoia myself.

Because I'm curious to know whether it's anything like the places that I sometimes go in my head.

"He will chose you, disarm you with his words, and control you with his presence. He will delight you with his wit and his plans."

He will act out his role, following society's prescribed measures.

"He will show you a good time, but you will always get the bill."

No woman should ever have to pay for anything. Period. On the other hand, if the man always picks up the bill, then there would be no problem if he got in her panties. Society has become nothing more than the marketplace with sex as the universal currency of highest value.

"He will smile and deceive you, and he will scare you with his eyes. "

Because they're not all ga-ga about having to put up with the BS. I can see why someone would be sick of all the games that get played just to get laid.

"And when he is through with you, and he will be through with you, he will desert you and take with him your innocence and your pride."

Wow. This guy's in more than one prison.

"You will be left much sadder but not a lot wiser,"

Any surprises here?

"...and for a long time you will wonder what happened and what you did wrong. And if another of his kind comes knocking at your door, will you open it?"

Fix the problem, not the blame. Or you'll end up waiting at the door for some passer-by.

I stopped reading that book. I almost started thinking that everyone around me was a psychopath!
