Dennis when you say that, "otherness" are you referring to differentiating?

Yes, of course John.
Can you follow through on that?
Can you follow through on that?
Re: If you were about to die....
Seeker, then it might be myself who has misunderstood the intent of Dan's question. An invitation to crow 'accomplishment'; take care of the 'unfinished business' of the self struck me as opportunity to hang out some ego to dry . . . so I hung out the whole kahuna . . . .

Because if I do then I'd have to stop thinking in order to think about it, which is impossible.Dennis Mahar wrote:Why don't you think about thinking.
Death as a category 'otherness'
Yes, it is a boundary of my "I".

Re: If you were about to die....
I would say that I was the spirit of thought. I would say that what I left behind was my struggle to realize this truth until it was a struggle no more.

The thread shifts attention away from those dang straw men, to within.SOfW wrote: Yeah I guess so Dan.

On my death bed
people appear before me.
The face appears
the presence appears.
Some are new
some I’ve always known.
I tell each one
the truth of who they are
for they listen.
They know I’m soon gone.
I’ve seen this
I’ve listened.

We can draw distinctions about thinking.Because if I do then I'd have to stop thinking in order to think about it, which is impossible.
What was Descartes thinking when he declared 'self surrounded by other' in effect?
That would only constitute How the World 'occurs' for Descartes.
How the World shows up for Rene.
Heidegger says if I think categorically a phenomenal discrimination is called forth that generates stuff like worthy and unworthy.
Effectively, that's saying 'I' is absolute and all else is otherness according to a mode of thinking.Yes, it is a boundary of my "I".
If the guy is 20 minutes from death he is giving a report about living (like a journalist) which is perhaps what Dan is going towards by saying 'captioning'.

Hey Shardrol,
Long time no see. How goes it?
I think most people are taking my questions far too literally. Never mind.

Anyway, the guy's run out of survival options.
Looking Good isn't occurring.
concerns about the pleat in his trousers and the cut of his jib.

Hi Dan, good to see you.Dan Rowden wrote:Hey Shardrol,

Nothing too radical here. I'm still in New York but plotting my escape.
Oops. Well I can stop any time. How would you answer?I think most people are taking my questions far too literally. Never mind.

Re: If you were about to die....
I didn't hear one accomplishment or any important last words, possibly related to enlightenment, that drastically change the lives of your loved ones. A small whole kahuna indeed. If this thread were halloween, and I were a teenage girl, I'd tell you to try again with the costume, how often can you get away with it? Must have done/learned a thing or two talking philosophy every day.Pye wrote: An invitation to crow 'accomplishment'; take care of the 'unfinished business' of the self struck me as opportunity to hang out some ego to dry . . . so I hung out the whole kahuna . . . .

LIving life as I am.Dan Rowden wrote:What would you say and to whom - assuming you had time (i.e. weeks) to write a eulogy? Who would you say you were? What would you say you've done that matters?
Write to my wife and children.
What I've done doesn't matter.
The people that have known me and know me now understand me.
I've a circle of perhaps ten close friends (brothers and sisters in spirit) and the rest have already preceded me in death. They know me as well as they conceivable can so there would be nothing to discuss.
Recently had a reunion in 2011 so that's that.
Adios.
Good bye.
Don't let the door hit you in the ass.
See you in the next life.
Edited for spelling error.

He was saying that he thinks that a thinking self exists, therefore he thinks that it exists. He's not a philosopher I rate highly.Dennis Mahar wrote:What was Descartes thinking when he declared 'self surrounded by other' in effect?
It's saying that the 'I' exists because of the other. If the other were to change, then so would the 'I'.Effectively, that's saying 'I' is absolute and all else is otherness according to a mode of thinking.

Re: If you were about to die....
If Dan's purpose in creating this thread was to trick certain(as in nearly all) forum members into writing about an issue that they can't mix in with their usual pseudo-philosophical flummery without revealing their most precious delusions, then he has been successful.
Or maybe I've had too much gaja. In either case, I've just realised that life is the mountain of the future, the summit of which we try to climb before being inevitably dragged down by the bungee cord, which is the present, attached to the fathoms of the abyss of death, which is the past. The tension in the cord is our hope, since the higher we climb the more we hope. Therefore it is better to die young than die old, since young people don't have as much hope as old people, since they don't have as much of a past.

Just in case someone needs help with that, probably most people :-)
Re: If you were about to die....
Dan, this thread . . . . it's yours, you know, and placed there at face-value.
You can't really blame the natives for over-thinking it :) but still it did something as jupiviv mentions.
But it's yours. These things are on your mind, and you've got an audience at least appreciative to you of their opportunities on this forum [that you have to babysit, swatting away all those spamming registrees]; at least appreciative of yourself in their varying degrees . . . . so why not answer this call yourself? Why not take this opportunity to eulogize yourself around some folks who do not just read you like a newspaper obit from a stranger?
Dan, [w]hat would you say and to whom - assuming you had time (i.e. weeks) to write a eulogy? Who would you say you were? What would you say you've done that matters?
You have time, yes?
Tell us, and then maybe we can all pile-on . . . :)

I'll do that as the day unfolds, Pye. It was primarily intended as a sort of thought experiment.

Re: If you were about to die....
Not everyone is enlightened enough to understand that it's okay that I die. I would tell those who I figured would not be okay with my death that it is okay, I've lived life and it's my time to go. I'll no longer have to deal with life's struggles, and I've learned all of the lessons that I could for life. My time is over.
Live your life so that you will not have any regrets - and when you mess up and regret something, fix it as best as you can. Life may seem long, but it is also quite short. Don't waste time.
I love you, and if I get an afterlife, I will love you then, too.
