Re: I just broke your toys :(

More specifically, uncertainty doesn't allow for events which are outside of the natural realm. When someone says that it's extremely unlikely that something could occur they don't mean it's extremely unlikely that something supernatural could occur. The events which could lead to Earth suddenly bre...

Re: I just broke your toys :(

Does thinking about a thing appearing without prior cause make it possible? It is absolutely impossible for an apple to appear in front of me without any cause because it takes specific conditions for the constituent parts of an apple to coalesce into what we know as an apple. There may be an extrem...

Re: Harry Potter mania

I've only seen a couple of the movies, so can't really tell. I do think you are talking shit though. Making a mountain out of a molehill, so to speak - gosh it is almost magical the way some of you lot are stretching this out! Regardless of what we may say or do, because of our special philosophica...

Re: Harry Potter mania

I think a more fair comparison would be R.A. Salvatore. Neither are fantastic writers, however, Salvatore make much deeper characters with characteristics you discover as you read his books, history which gradually unfolds and subtle hints of that history (through the actions of said characters) fro...

Re: Harry Potter mania

There isn't much to be bold about... They books pander to a generation that isn't used to be challenged intellectually with a story that is just fantastical enough to spark what little imagination most people have and just familiar enough to help children connect with it. Harry Potter is far too ave...

Re: Idiotic Mottos, Sayings & Quotes

I honestly believe the Europeans should have stopped at the doorstep and not destroyed or severely crippled numerous ancient civilizations. A lack of technological advancement is no reason to condemn millions of people to death. They were no more or less enlightened than their European conquerers an...

Re: Idiotic Mottos, Sayings & Quotes

My biggest pet peeve is "Live life to it's fullest". That is the most cliche and empty personal motto I have ever heard especially given the kind of people who usually parrot it. I'd rather live an entire life in a prison cell than in the way which many people consider to be living life to...

Re: Thinking Ruins Life

I judge a book based on how long it keeps me enamored. This has nothing to do with how long it is. The Diamond Sutra, which is about the extent of my exposure to Siddhartha, is only a couple dozen pages, but I spent 2 years with the concepts in it. Ah, I get it, I misunderstood what you were saying...

Re: Thinking Ruins Life

By way of contrast, to show who I believe to be talented and thoughtful writers, it took me 4 years to figure out Nietzsche, around 2 to figure out Sidharrtha Gautama (arguably not a writer), another 2 to figure out Lao Tzu, .... That's like a grade school kid who keeps mentioning how many pages ar...

Re: Thought Forms the Basis of Perceptual Reality

Sounds like a critique of "Ultimate Reality" to me... Reality is accessed, interpreted and presented to us through our senses and even though there may be an "Absolute Reality" behind all of the mediums with which we are able to perceive reality we will never truly be able to kno...

Re: Am I doing something wrong here?

Correct me if I'm wrong but a pantheist God is everything. So instead of God being a separate entity or multiple entities everything is God and God is everything. Personally I don't see how that solves anything because all you're doing is putting things under the heading of God for no other reason t...

Re: Am I doing something wrong here?

That may very well be his argument, I have no idea, but you'd still have to provide something which answers the question of God's existence one way or the other. Scientific analysis has the advantage of being rather definitive once you've reached a certain point so scientific proof of God's existenc...

Re: Am I doing something wrong here?

I've spent a bit of time there while at work for no other reason than I've never been exposed to a place like that before. Not only have I never been to a forum populated by such a large number of atheists so I have really no idea what "atheist culture" is like. Even though I'm bored now i...

Re: My Sucky American Education

It sounds like you did the right thing since it's an interest of his. The real problem isn't getting it to someone who can do something but to someone who cares and if he cares about the issue then he's the best person to present your ideas to. Everything else will come if the project develops.

Re: My Sucky American Education

Congress is comprised of both the House of Representative and the Senate. Each state has a certain number of congressmen in the House of Representatives based on the population of the state. Each state also gets two senators independent of the population of the state. Technically either can be calle...

Re: the emptiness of logic

Let me see if I'm getting this correctly: Reality exhibits only one state, that of truth, however, for logic to be worth something there needs to be a "true" and a "false"? If I'm correct then I further don't see why it matters whether logic inherently exists in the universe. As ...

Re: Am I doing something wrong here?

I really don't feel like arguing about this until my fingers fall off. I simply feel that Dan's method was so blatantly false and I doubt he chose it as much as fell into it because it certainly doesn't read as rational and intentional. That's it, I just don't agree and I don't understand where this...

Re: Am I doing something wrong here?

I think that phrase should be reworded a bit... It's a teacher's prerogative to use the best method of teaching to reach his students and that, obviously, was not the best method. That is the kind of method you use on a religious forum, bashing a few heads to get attention and hopefully snagging a f...

Re: Am I doing something wrong here?

The people replying, at least, are like every other forum on the net; a group of people with a like mind who have rallied around something. Yes, they are a bit fanatic in their atheism and quite intellectually-obsessed with themselves, but the general discourse there is far better than just about an...
