Re: For Kelly Jones

So when you drag something in the light of day, is that for the benefit of yourself, the unknown audience or the owner of the thing you just dragged out? It's to benefit truth itself. I see truth as something to be valued for its own sake. You're doing a good job but to whom are you preaching? Are ...

Re: Felling the axiom of identity

I'm guessing that the equation establishing the position of roots will be unchanged for any position of the vertex on the y axis. It doesn't mean that the identity of the parabola changes essentially, when the vertex crosses the y axis at greater than 0. It just means the roots are more like potenti...

Re: On Women, by Artur Schopenhauer

By the way, how did you come to the conclusion that reasoning and the deft use of concepts, don't avail one of truths?

What was the actual thought process?

Re: On Women, by Artur Schopenhauer

I'm sorry, but if you throw concepts out the window, then you can't hope to communicate coherently, Bob. Just saying, "A real man loves" doesn't really say much. And saying, "You'll never know what I mean if you don't know what I'm talking about," is also rich! What do you actual...

Re: Felling the axiom of identity

There's no challenge to the law of identity there. Your definition was that an upward opening parabola always has two roots if the vertex is at y≤0; and if positioned at y=0, the two roots are identical. But if the vertex is at y>0, then there aren't any roots, because the vertex doesn't touch the x...

Re: On Women, by Artur Schopenhauer

Do you think his Eureka moment was in accepting emotions? It's far more intelligent to understand them. For instance, animal life can teach us: Fear is to get the animal to move away from a predator fast. Anger is to fight against a predator. Love is to bond with a territorial rival of the opposite ...

Re: For Kelly Jones

Well, yes, I made that point too. Logically, an argument cannot be defeated by a reference to the person who makes it unless the argument relies on that information for its proof. However, psychologically, an evasive and irrational person presents arguments to hide what they really mean, which they ...

Re: For Kelly Jones

People can be stimulated to improve, if one is skillful enough. Just by pointing out stuff that they know in a henid form, but aren't able to clarify, brings them to a better state of consciousness. It really does work. And personal criticism can really work too, because the egotist will defend them...

I thought his closing remarks, about institutionalising polygamy openly, rather than keeping the reality of polygamy disguised under the mask of monogamy, as the option for most men who are inclined towards marriage was treacherous for men, because by looking after several women for the term of thei...

Another of women's vices: State of Mind The delight which women in particular, and especially the less enlightened, have in terrifying children with all sorts of imaginary notions about a man who comes and takes them, etc. (as today, May 5, out in the neighbourhood of Hirschholm, I heard a girl tell...

Re: Why existence does not equal appearance

Good point; I have also been guilty of passing judgement on the dead. Ad hominems are also wrong against the dead (even though the damage may not be as bad because you probably can not hinder the individual's post-mortem growth, though you may hinder the spread of their ideas)- again, when they are...

What happened with your internet access? Did the electricity/ADSL cables freeze or something? I didn't respond to Kevin's point about the ad hominem because it was a good point, but somewhat irrelevant. It doesn't focus on what to do with someone who, by sheer luck, happens to speak the truth occasi...

Re: For Kelly Jones

Miracle! An argument. Yes, unfortunately, nihilism is an argument, so you've contradicted yourself. You're arguing that everything is meaningless, but you yourself are the one imposing a meaning there. That's what meanings are. That all our ideas are arbitrated purely by ourselves, and that there is...

Re: For Kelly Jones

Blair's insults aren't remotely Zennish, Dennis. He is a snarling human, who simply enjoys belittling and insulting for its own sake. It's an ego thing: his joy is in the very mediocre level of spinning creative insults. People like him are a dime a dozen. Zagreus, for instance, a real bore, was a t...

Link here.

An interesting analysis of the woman problem, which closes in a way treacherous to men, but inevitably compassionate to women.

As a side note, perhaps I'm being unrealistic for expecting people on the Genius forum to present actual arguments and reasoning, given the way society is. But if I am to stop making my demands on others to lift their game, here as elsewhere, then I might as well be a complete recluse. God knows lif...

Diebert, You may believe it's petty, "overnurturing" (whatever that means), and overanalysing, but I believe that since unconsciousness strives to be oblivious to its evasiveness and suppression, that a healthy will to truth will and must drag things into the clear light of day - however d...

Argumentum ad hominem is a fallacy not because criticism upsets fragile people, but because an argument without references to the presenter of the argument cannot be disproven by bringing in that content. It's a category error.
