Re: Is Humanity a Failed Experiment?
Speaking of doomed, just finished reading The Manipulated Man by Esther Vilar... "As a result of 'love,' man is able to hide his cowardly self-deception behind a smoke screen of sentiment. He is able to make himself believe that his senseless enslavement to woman and her hostages is more than a...

Re: Is Humanity a Failed Experiment?
Hmmm, interesting where this thread has gone. I guess I should have seen it coming. Maybe what I should have asked was, "Do you think the human species was destined to self-destruct, and wisdom/enlightenment is the escape hatch from the impending dead-end?" or some such... Never mind. Pret...

Re: Jed
Well, my argument actually doesn't work, because it assumes that nothing other than the "pretense", or what you call "consensual reality", exists, whereas you believe that there is a "Real Reality". [...]Reality is not beyond reach, it is everything . What I am trying ...

Re: Is Humanity a Failed Experiment?
I agree with Carl that "experiment" connotes something false. Humanity is a fact, not an experiment. To say we have failed or even are failing also connotes something false - teleology. To judge "failure" you must have some framework from within which to judge such a thing. What...

Rebecca, I assume that you concur with the poem's sentiments, else you wouldn't have posted it. No, I think it's interesting and thought-provoking. Doesn't mean I agree with anything. In that case perhaps you can explain something about it to me. It seems to describe pretty much everything that we ...

Maestro- don't know who wrote this but it seems to fit: VIRTUAL REALITY Let's pretend to be perfect Let's pretend to be bad Let's pretend to be low life Let's pretend to be mad Let's rip off our clothing And pretend to be holy Let's dress up like cops And go out patrolling Let's pretend to be starvi...

Re: Is Humanity a Failed Experiment?
Kevin - It's too early to say that we've failed. When we're extinct, we've failed. That makes sense. Would you say we're circling the drain? Carl - The term 'experiment' implies a willed-from-outside genesis. Do you assume a conscious God, or gods, who incubated the species? No. Experiment of life i...

Is Humanity a Failed Experiment?
The notion has been raised that we are currently riding out an evolutionary dead-end. Humanity is a failed experiment. And wisdom is simply a mutation. I would like to know what the opinions are on this. I recently received a mass email from Sam Harris, who contributed to "The Annual Edge Quest...

1otherS, Dan, are you going to answer my challenges or just stick with the sycophants like you always do? Take a look at your own words. Read them slowly. Conclusion: if you think you're right, but become the laughing-stock of Ne Plus Ultra-members who have REAL degrees in philosophy, hard science, ...

Re: Jed
It's like a man wanting to protect his own sense of what is virtuous. I'm reminded of a line from one of your videos (Sex & Ideation): "It's ironic in that man finds worth for himself in the creation of a thing that finds its own worth in being a thing created." The "social ficti...

Re: Jed
Hmm. Well, that can be interpreted many ways. In the actual story, I think the reason is that he's dealing with some hugely emotional regret due to something about his long-lost daughter, which is never made very clear. It seems he's been tortured for many years by his emotions (going to mass every...

Re: Jed
Has anybody here seen "Million Dollar Baby"? It's about a female boxer. I think it's interesting in the beginning when she's in the gym trying to get Clint Eastwood to be her trainer. He says, "I don't train women," and repeatedly tells her other trainers would be happy to take ...

Hi David, Just to let you know the quote headings got reversed on your last post between you and I. It should read: I think he is using his philosophic knowledge to indulge in his true love - namely, subjecting others to his sexual/pedophiliac perversions. Osho, the leader of the orange people, did ...

Re: Jed
No amount of justification on McKenna's part can hide the sleazy nature of his ego, his rampant self-indulgences and the disrespect he displays towards others, particularly females. If he tries to palm this off as being the universe's doing, then I have even less respect for him. So are you saying ...

Re: Jed
The key thing is stop being sexual oneself. That is, ceasing the mad urge to look outwards and use others for completion, to crave their approval, to want to hypnotize and dominate them. In other words, by learning how to be self-contained. So to translate this to the female, to stop wanting to be ...

It's no wonder he likes young women. He is one! Ha ha, I never thought of that. Maybe that is why I resonated so much with him. Damn! Perhaps Jed is writing his own Gita. And the name of the book is Spiritual Warfare, how apt. hmm! Song of the Lord or the lullabye of Maya... it is what you make it. The ego will always take the truth and twist it. On the cover of Spiritual Warfare is a quote that calls it "disturbing"......

Also for some reason Jed marks a terrible crisis, in which an individual crashes under the irrationality of the society as beginning of awakening and makes a huge deal out of it. In general such a crisis may not lead to awakening at all, and awakening may not require such a dramatic crash and burn....

If I have a burning ambition to achieve some end, what is there to be optimistic about? That I can? Well, I don't really know that, do I? Isn't it the purity and force of that ambition that will actually determine it? If purity and force of ambition are what determine success, and you have enough o...
