How do you define "nothingness"? I don't have a problem with the concept. If I ask someone "What's on TV?" and they say "Nothing", I know exactly what they are saying. If you define it to mean "something that's impossible to conceptualize or visualize", then ...

Re: irrational universe?

I've been thinking about the whole infinite universe thing. If it's always been here and never here, can there even be nothingness? Nothingness exists in contrast to something. Space is just such an example of "nothingness." How can you visualize nothingness, empty space? But this empty s...

It seems Leah and Faust have read one too many New Age self-help books. What are you talking about? What I said had nothing to do with New Age, infact most 'new age' people I know lack most of these qualities. New Age is making men feminine, and my qualities are anything but. New Age preaches you t...

There's nothing wrong with pride and fearlessness, and your ego problem, the way to solve the 'kill or be killed' problem is to recognize other people's egos and to develop your superego. yes honesty is important, but you should always remember the animal side of man, and so despise yourself a litt...

If the universe is constant, you still haven't my question about whether there can ever be 'nothingness.' since if say that the universe has always been here, we'd have to say that it was never here as well. But it's impossible to conceptualize and visualize this 'nothingness.'

irrational universe?

I've been thinking about the whole infinite universe thing. If it's always been here and never here, can there even be nothingness? How can you visualize nothingness, empty space? But this empty space is something. It's impossible to visualize or conceive of an empty vacuum. It would be total blackn...

Re: animal experimentation

if human lives can be saved by sacrificing a few hundred monkeys, why not? If a few monkeys' lives can be saved by sacrificing a few million human beings, why not? Seems perfectly reasonable to me. Here's another context: if white lives can be saved by sacrificing a few hundred blacks, why not? It'...

animal experimentation

This issue is as split as abortion or gay marriage. Some people such as Spinoza may think, well animals and humans are part of nature, there's no 'god' that will punish for what we do after we die, therefore we should experiment and benefit ourselves since they're only 'animals.' if human lives can ...

Carl Jung once said something to the effect of "There is so much outer war because there is such a lack of inner war." He meant purposeful inner struggle to transform oneself.
transform oneself not to be outerly violent that is.

It also depends what you mean by violence. Aggression/Assertion is a type of physical coercion/minute violence. A more confident and aggressive man will necessarily violently intimidate another lesser confident man in a violent act to submission. In many cases the more assertive man doesn't want thi...

. From my experiences, "academic philosophy" is a type of philosophy, and not a basket term for anything that goes on in a university. At the big uni, there are whole courses in determinism (causality), materialism, necessity and contingency, wherein causality is not the conclusion arrive...

Interesting, just today in class we were talking about the finite universe fallacy that the Minefield touches on. I don't know about you but there was almost nothing but lecturing on cause-and-effect . . . That sounds good to me. I just hope they don't then say, "Well, we dealt with the idea c...

. Faust writes: Pye, are you agreeing with this notion of ethics or are you not? Do you think that there is business and corporate ethics? If not are you a socialist/communist/anarchist? In which case other severe disadvantages will apply as well. Thankyou for your question, Faust. Ethics is philos...

There are much more interesting metaphysical issues, such as causality (which is rarely emphasized in academies at all). I think that's a very good point. Causality is probably the most important thing in philosophy but is normally relegated to the "too hard" basket. Something similar hap...

faust, see David's essay: On the Limitations of Academic Intelligence I know this wasn't directed at me, but since I've had a few years in the program (Although, I must admit, I attend the local coffee shop more days out of the week than classes), I would like to answer this. The biggest problem wi...

Kevin, one of my majors is currently philosophy (psychology is 2nd) in my first year. I have alot of respect for you as you are the few people like myself who desire to find the truth regardless of the consequences. Now, I have alot of criticism against university, since in this day and age it seems...
