Re: Email to Sam Harris:

And I'm bored.
Really? I don't suffer from boredom. Perhaps it's because, unlike you, I am not omniscient, eh?

Or maybe you should get out a bit more. The amount of people prepared to to pull one over you is enough to save any good, reasoning mind from the malaise of such luxurious motivations.

Re: What is consciousness?

Drop the mental image of yourself. You see yourself as a person, but you're really all that is. You need to dis-identify from the definitions of self relating to society. "I am so and so's daughter or mother, for example. (This is exactly why I have nothing to do with clairvoyants and psycholo...

Re: If you could eliminate one thing from life what would it

RZoo, It's looking pretty bleak. We have the power to physically destroy humanity and we're constantly improving our power to control people (for instance, we already attempt to reduce mental diversity in our population via "medication"). Unless we colonize other planets or dismantle or de...

L: I would say need would be fear's instinctual/primal counterpart (as opposed to psychological/psychosocial counterpart)*, rather than desire. D: So would you say "need" is an emotion or not? Who wrote that? (: What I meant was, need and fear rather than fear and desire are more suitable...

Re: If you could eliminate one thing from life what would it

I was in the process of closing webpages before starting a game of AOE2. Here's an excerpt from a man whose observations are always across the totality of the subject: We see how the history of industry and the established objective existence of industry are the open book of man’s essential powers, ...

Re: If you could eliminate one thing from life what would it

Why would you be concerned about the slander against reality of the weak-willed? Reality certainly isn't. In fact, isn't it necessarily true that it's reality that makes the weak-willed weak, just as it is reality that makes the strong-willed. Will the "meek" destroy the Earth from an inab...

Moreover, it would be sensible (if you value such a thing) to make clear distinctions between the "you" doing the dropping and the "you" being dropped.

Re: If you could eliminate one thing from life what would it

Trick question - you can't eliminate anything without eliminating it all. Although that's a good question - would you happily eliminate it all? Let's discuss the human bias against life. Almost everyone seems to want to eliminate something, be it violence, lying, fallacies, poverty, or so on. Why i...

Re: Shakespeare nailed it

Without emotions, a person cannot have motivations. That sounds like an extreme claim only loosely based on a mishmash of perhaps popular neuroscience or otherwise unclear or generic definitions. Motivations obviously are complex things: instincts, reflexes, curiosity and love are already four moti...

Re: What is consciousness?

When you hear the word "consciousness," what does it mean to you? To me, it is everything that exists. Consciousness is what we are and what everything around us is made of. We project ourselves as the world and experience being in a world. Really? All that from a sound? What does a sound...

Re: Email to Sam Harris:

It is not the job of observation to judge or value itself in any sense. The reason why anything is observed to begin with is because of the judgment that it needs to be observed as opposed to, say, imagined. And that judgment is itself made without any observation. Unless you address this argument ...

Re: Email to Sam Harris:

The only way you can reasonably oppose the above argument is by claiming that the certain things have an intrinsic value, i.e., a value built into their very nature. I think that's rather optimistic of you! Observation can inform empirical judgment, i.e., provide the material which is to be judged....

Re: Email to Sam Harris:

That's because the simile is irrelevant. A blind man seeing because he knows about eyes would be analogous to a immoral man being moral because he knows about morality. That is certainly not what I said. What you said is: Besides, a person can observe an act that contradicts a principle while at th...

The empirical observation of the enactment of a moral principle would have to be guided by that principle itself.
