Re: Can you ever be certain that you are reasoning correctly?

There is an experience of the "now" and an experience of something other than now, which we call "the past", which we define as being prior to the present. The present must, logically be caused by the past, since there's nothing else that could cause the present. You are not mak...

Re: Can you ever be certain that you are reasoning correctly?

]You must rely on deductive logic only and then there is only 'now' as you suggested yourself. Inferring a timeflow from the comparison of adjacent snapshots is an inductive reasoning. Firstly, we don't "infer a timeflow". Rather, we experience time , which is a completely different thing...

Re: Can you ever be certain that you are reasoning correctly?

That's right. With logic we indeed have access to absolute truth. You should know better. It is like the first cause argument in the theistic cosmogony. There is no hard proof for a first cause in logic either. Every logic you choose has basic tenets that cannot be proven but are adopted. For Eucli...

You're not judging people by their posts, by any chance? Incidentally, why do you assume that enlightened people are concerned with things like peace? - No I'm judging the content of their argument. I do admit however that I have used ad hominems myself, and that I probably cannot totally refrain f...

Re: Can you ever be certain that you are reasoning correctly?

Don't jump to conclusions Trevor, especially in places where the ceiling is low. I was talking of the wisdom of a culture not of personal wisdom. But earlier you said wisdom is knowing how to gain knowledge, and contrasted it with a vegetative state. That is what I meant. Either way, whether cultur...

Re: Can you ever be certain that you are reasoning correctly?

Some bloke started to name it science for some reason. Well, it's a name. And yes, there are certainly more types of knowledge than the natural sciences if that's what you mean. Since I usually see wisdom considered a separate thing from knowledge -- and in some traditions, in direct opposition to ...

True wisdom is knowing how to gain knowledge, the path itself if you will, not a vegatative state in trivials like A=A. Wait, so wisdom is having some knowledge that gets more knowledge? Is there nothing more to wisdom than a certain type of knowledge? Some bloke started to name it science for some...

Kevin,

I'd like to know with which of the folowing staements do you agree?

1) A=A cannot be verified empirically
2) A=A cannot be proven logically
3) From A=A alone non-trivial sentences cannot be build
4) The reason for adopting A=A is it's congruence with macro-level appearences

Re: Can you ever be certain that you are reasoning correctly?

You are affirming A=A, whether you (or your ego) likes it or not. A cannot be anything but A. It's that simple, whether you view it as the letter A, or anything broader. Something is what it is, and nothing is what it is. You can only understand this if your consciousness resonates truth only, ie ....

The fact that you are reading and responding to these words is proof enough that A=A. The ego will twist and turn and wriggle and whine and winge and insist that A is not A, but the ego is wrong. A=A, that is the only truth you ever need to comprehend to give your existence meaning. Is that your eg...
