Re: Zizek on Lacan's Triad & Interpretation of Freud

The self is a centre from which a conscious entity can focus on that which is not that centre.

Re: The Sexes

Well, there is no empirical evidence that consciousness comes from the brain, only that it seems to come from the brain. We mustn't conflate correlation with causation. Why? It is completely clear to me, via the non-conscious experience of dreamless sleep, that a brain is required for our conscious...

Re: The Sexes

No, he is just saying that the ego will create the subjective justification. Is the greater good what your ego has learnt to be more beneficial to you or others or some combo thereof? I think in relation to the future greater good for others is perhaps a zero sum game. Any good will incur unintended...

Re: To what degree can we weed out our delusions on reality?

And all things are illusions. They are as real as ever, the illusion is that they exist independent of what is seen of the mind. That which causes the mind to see them exists. They are independent from the mind, as the realization of them is an effect, the A=A result of causes. They are not an illu...

Re: Youtube stuff

Yeah, Russell is a pretty intelligent and funny dude...and a stirrer which I like. Mind you if one knew him well, he'd probably be quite a pain. It is pleasing he can do the sort of out there stuff he does without still having to take hard drugs. I also like the fact that he goes off at the Paparazzi.

These two aboriginal songs induce Nessun Dorma like feelings within me, although completely different music. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hXDJneVbEC8 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VaqLw1CvPMk and one of the best early pop songs ever (providing one ignores the soppy topic) Russell Morris - Sweet S...

Re: To what degree can we weed out our delusions on reality?

Funny enough - on the train this morning I read the following by Brain Eno The Limits Of Intuition We sometimes tend to think that ideas and feelings arising from our intuitions are intrinsically superior to those achieved by reason and logic. Intuition—the 'gut'—becomes deified as the Noble Savage ...

Re: To what degree can we weed out our delusions on reality?

The Big Bang never happened A big bang of a non-singularity variety may have for our observable section of the universe – as in the whole space-time plane or bubble we live within (singularities being fantasy). Of course, what happens at the macro level also happens at the micro level, so the offen...

Re: To what degree can we weed out our delusions on reality?

But I'm glad you recognise that the Universe has always been Infinite. Infinite in what way? Infinite as a process - Yes As the universe at any point of time is all that is/exists at that point of time with no “outside” then it is infinite in that sense. I’d class that as being infinite internally ...

Just being silly...and mildly insane (nothing rational to be found here) The name Dan is of Hebrew origin, and the meaning of Dan is "judge; God is my judge", so says the web. We could measure our degree of non-delusionalism using the GO or Martial arts "Dan" rankings, with Dan t...

Re: To what degree can we weed out our delusions on reality?

[I'm not sure that "consciousness" is the right word either though as there is only one universal consciousness] I cannot fathom why that statement is not a result of delusion. Consciousness is clearly an emergent property. All things are emergent properties. ==============================...

To me Regina Spektor is easily the best female singer/songwriter of recent years.

Re: The Universe was created by a Dummy

The Universe was created by a complete Dummy. It is far dumber than you think. Any shape has to be caused in the first place. Any pattern such as a hexagon presupposes that fundamental order and structure already exist in the form of primary particles that are not caused. Order in the universe is t...

Re: The Century of the Self

A person is full of aversions and preferences. Those are 'buttons' or points of 'reactivity'. To be spiritual is to be free of that machinery. Yes, Dennis, but you are still in it only for what you get out of it. Your self, may be flat and expanded in reach, though perhaps we could say of a more of...

One of the greatest movie scenes, though this isn't all of it.
Yes, very good. Don't recall seeing that before (don't watch old films).

I'd say John Hurt used this scene to develop his portrayal of The Elephant Man.

Well, that just means I have no idea either - even after X years. This guy is just presenting the Alex viewpoint in a simple way.

(PS. I've a noticable tendency to get gungho about novel-to-me positions for a few days then forget about them. Novelty is my primary provider of happiness).
