Re: feminists are more hypocritical than I thought.

Why? Why should the women in the video be held accountable for what boils down to 'fashion'? The two - women and fashion - are synonymous, making their actions in the video as natural as anything else women do. Excuse me? I don't think it has anything to do with "fashion". I'm not saying ...

Re: Best Moral Philosophy?

Then you should say that "logic is the basis of ALL values" But it's possible (while foolish) to value things without logic. For example, maybe I value getting drunk and having one night stands with strangers despite the fact that it may have negative consequences. I'm valuing something w...

Re: Best Moral Philosophy?

feelings must be the basis of ALL values. How did you evaluate that to be true? By feelings? If so, you've thrown reason out the window. If not, you're contradicting yourself. So the statement is wrong either way. I evaluate it to be true through logic. Why do we eat food or seek shelter or so on? ...

Re: Firefox doesn't work with this site

I always update firefox whenever an update comes out so whatever number we're up to.
I keep getting 404 errors and it says that the server couldn't recognize the browser's request.
So now I'm using google chrome for this site.

Re: feminists are more hypocritical than I thought.

I'm by no means saying that the women shouldn't be allowed to be nude, I'm just saying that if they're going to support a music video with sexist lyrics they should be held accountable for their equally sexist actions of supporting it.

Re: Best Moral Philosophy?

@guest_of_logic You make a good point about the "amount" happiness. The same could be said for the "amount" of good deeds done if we use good deeds rather than happiness as a measuring stick. Perhaps the best outcome is the most good deeds per person? I'd have to think more about...

feminists are more hypocritical than I thought.

There's this controversial music video out called "blurred lines" and basically there are women dancing nude while a couple of fully clothed guys sing about sexual stuff. Naturally this is going to make feminists livid because "it's sexist". Whether or not it's sexist is irreleva...

Best Moral Philosophy?

Although I'm hesitant I think I would assess utilitarianism as the best moral philosophy. The reason I'm hesitant though is because you could easily say something like this: "There are 10 violently criminal people and 1 saint. The 10 criminals are on one train and the saint is on the other. You...

The test seemed kind of dumb to me. I got a 20. I don't see why they only showed the ratings for men.

Wow. I go on vacation a couple days and this happens?

I'm going to sort of agree with Kunga and SeekerOfWisdom on this one.

The self does exist, but only in the delusional sense, like freewill exists as an illusion.

Because dreams (and imagination in general) only exists inside one's brain, in one's skull, as opposed to other people's arms. ..... The neurons, structures and chemicals in your brain and all that is going on there never touches another person's arm during a dream or fantasy. Oh, I misunderstood t...

Re: Dreams and Reality

If thinking in terms of duality from "fantasy" to "reality" is bad... Why don't you react to dreams in your waking life? Like if someone cut off your arm in a dream would you only be ok with it because it "grew back" when you woke up? Or would you walk up to them and be...

Re: Dreams and Reality

You mistake the meaning of 'reincarnation', as does everyone, it implies that the body dies and the mind is born into a new body. This gives off all kinds of unreasonable connotations, it is more like the mind simply continues to experience, as it is doing right now. (There is no reason to assume e...

Re: Dreams and Reality

We have different goals if your goal is not to end the mind that distinguishes. My understanding is that a fool is born again as a mind that distinguishes out of ignorance; such a mind is a mind of attachment. A sage, however, is not born again because of his or her devotion to becoming unattached,...

Re: Zizek on Lacan's Triad & Interpretation of Freud

See how hard it is to define "self" without being tautological? So far I've got definitions that basically explain the application of the word but don't tell me what "self" is. "The self the idea of the being which one occupies." What is a "one"? Ah I see wha...

Could those who are of a mind to do so, for the sake of greater clarity in this discussion, give me their definition of "self"? Please do so without resort to any synonyms whatever. No "I"s in other words. Basically I want to see who can actually do it (no dictionaries or Wiki e...

Re: Zizek on Lacan's Triad & Interpretation of Freud

A conscious conceptual framework is constructed using reason; an unconscious one using signifiers. Can you set out in logical order the exact premises (numbered) which lead you to that conclusion: "That would be like saying that Helen Keller had no expectations because she had no concept of so...

Re: Dreams and Reality

The imaginary and the real, 2) and 3), are only differentiated by perspective, they exist in the same manner. To say these worldly experiences (sensations and mental formations) are somehow 'more real' or 'more true' than other formations is ridiculous. So fantasy and reality are the same to you? U...

Re: Zizek on Lacan's Triad & Interpretation of Freud

I wanted to address this. Reasonable/unreasonable isn't really applicable to emotional states, because emotions describe a state of unconsciousness. For example, when very happy, nothing exists but happiness; when very angry, nothing exists but wrath. An injection of reason by oneself or others ten...

Re: Zizek on Lacan's Triad & Interpretation of Freud

I try to continually talk myself out of being unreasonable , regardless if I'm happy or not. So if you bowl a 300 you aren't happy about it because you know that you cannot take personal responsibility for it? It really seems like you're hurting yourself by trying to be "reasonable" all t...

Re: Zizek on Lacan's Triad & Interpretation of Freud

Feelings are a kind of thought. If you had no feelings about the deficiency you would ignore it. I won't argue that being unreasonable isn't discomforting. And while at times I may desire to alleviate the discomfort, it takes a leap of reasoning to realize that the very nature of my desiring of all...

Re: Zizek on Lacan's Triad & Interpretation of Freud

Joy may accompany accomplishment, but it certainly isn't the goal . You only think that because any old kind of satisfaction will not do. If you want to dance to good music you do not instead satisfy yourself by doing something else. You want to DANCE! I don't "feel" that it is deficient,...

Dreams and Reality

As far as I can tell there are 4 types of "realness". 1.) The illogical which is never true such as married bachelors etc. 2.) The imaginary which is true only sometimes such as dreams. 3.) The real which is true only thus far such as the physical world. 4.) The ultimately real which is tr...
