Re: Can causality be infinite?
Before one is able to speak of someone being a responsible agent, that someone first has to know what he's doing, in other words becoming more conscious. If this doesn't seem the case, one could point out faults but it will always revolve around not being conscious enough, a troubled connection to ...

Re: Can causality be infinite?
David , David: Firstly, the concept of causation points to a reality beyond itself. If it was a mere thought-construct which didn't point anywhere, it would be useless. The value of it lies in its ability to direct the mind's attention to the fundamental principle of all existence. sam: And what mi...

Re: Can causality be infinite?
I don't see any evidence of my casting blame here, your biased "translations" notwithstanding. Each of my observations above constitutes a judgement, not an act of casting blame. Are you able to see the difference? Oh boy. Denial by definition. Try Merriam-Webster: to find fault with, to ...

Re: Eye opening books
Byron Katie's Loving What Is is a very significant book as a practical guide to enlightenment. It takes enlightenment out of the airy-fairy notion of being some wonderful but undefined experience and puts it right into your hands. Anyone with an interest in enlightenment would do well to take a look.

Re: Can causality be infinite?
David , sam: You are referring to the principle as a concept. All concepts exist outside of time. The concept of gravity exists outside of time but I never hear you going on and on about it. David: Firstly, the concept of causation points to a reality beyond itself. If it was a mere thought-constru...

Re: Can causality be infinite?
David , sam: David expressly rejects surrender as a path. He preaches causation while blaming others for their ideas and actions all the time. David: I understand why you think this, but you are mistaken. sam: Must I quote you? David: Be my guest. Okay, a small sampling: You have mentioned, Kevin, ...

Re: Can causality be infinite?
DT , sam: I don't see that. Causation is an everyday phenomena. The universe is what we regard as our environment in toto. Trying to explain our environment in toto through an everyday phenomenom leads to contradictions which I described. DT: How exactly are you addressing my objections to your app...

Re: Can causality be infinite?
DT , Basically, your original statement above equivocates via category error. It applies one definition of reality to causation and another definition of reality to universe. I don't see that. Causation is an everyday phenomena. The universe is what we regard as our environment in toto. Trying to e...

Re: Can causality be infinite?
David , sam: Well, causation does not really fit in with timelessness since causation is linear within time. David: That is a very narrow conception of causation. But even within the constraints of this narrow conception, it can be seen that the process of causation exists outside of time. While th...

Re: Faith
The truth is usually discussed in relation to content, not context. You can prove or deny content but context is a given. The provability(truth) of truth is a meaningless idea.
Like asking whether this sentence is true or false.

Re: Can causality be infinite?
Sure. Cause and effect arise with time and occur in a linear fashion. Causation is meaningless in a timeless framework.

Re: Can causality be infinite?
David , For those who are perceptive enough, causation points directly to the timelessness of the Universe, to its existence beyond life and death, which is immensely satisfying to know. Well, causation does not really fit in with timelessness since causation is linear within time. DT , As a seeker...

Re: Is belief in an inherently existing self common?
Jason , I think the problem with your discussion with David is that you two are really talking about different things. The self you are describing certainly exists as a limited and constrained identity. Clearly such a self is dependent on a number of things but the self David is interested in is on...

Re: Can causality be infinite?
average , You have hit upon the problem of treating causation literally in an ontological sense. It leads either to an infinite regress or something out of nothing. Neither one is a satisfying explanation to the mind. Causation should simply be treated as a view of how to relate events which are kn...

sam: A Buddha's enlightenment is about "I AM." It isn't about what he likes for breakfast. David: I never said that it was. Quite the opposite, in fact. Your use of the phrase, "I AM", althoughy catchy and cliched, is meaningless if you don't actually specify what it means. I've...

Re: Drug life
Just as a Buddha doesn't cease having perceptions, even though it is said that he transcends all perceptions, he doesn't cease forming judgments and articulating views, even though it is said that he transcends all views. A mind immersed in emptiness isn't a blank mind where nothing happens. It is ...

By "bag of tricks" I don't mean to imply that you are a magician, or that you are in control of the process. Cleay, the trickery is habitual, subconscious and instinctive. It is very real, all the same. I was joking about it. I just think it's funny when someone refers to my "tricks....

Re: End of Suffering?
It is not some long drawn therapy or denial as you put it, rather it is an off switch for negative imagination and emotion. It is very surprising to me. I said it reminded me of EMDR (which isn't a long drawn-out therapy either, read the link). I'm not sure where you got denial from. But really you...
