Re: Man and Woman's Evolution

A small correction here Nick, it was the women who did the gatherering. Do you ever watch the National Geographic channel? Even today, women have a better sense of color acuity than men and evolutionary biologists theorize that this physical characteristic evolved as a result of hunter/gatherer per...

Re: Man and Woman's Evolution

The complaints are over feelings . People are indignant . They are angry . They fear they are being deliberately and maliciously hurt by being told they're inferior, inhuman, or somehow made abject. The problem is, these feelings keep interfering with their perception. It is very hard to reason wit...

Re: Man and Woman's Evolution

Let me be as precise and to the point as possible... It was the oppression of women by men that led to the rise of civilization by allowing men to think about "higher things", and not just sex and providing food. Before the rise of civilization, children took their mother's surname, (usual...

Re: Man and Woman's Evolution

A man rarely abandons a woman, but a woman often abandons a man. Most breakups are initiated by women. If a man falls in love with another woman, he just cheats, with always the intent of keeping his previous woman, sometimes trying to juggle both. If a woman cheats, it's because she's looking to p...

Re: Man and Woman's Evolution

Good post, but I would also like to ask, what makes an attractive woman stick with a man, considering there are many other men out there who are performing more powerfully? Nothing. This would have been why man invented marriage as you went on to say... I'm not convinced there are any very signific...

Re: Man and Woman's Evolution

What I meant there was that the need to make an extra effort to keep men attached to them would actually have arisen only in a more civilised society. There is no example of a non-human species of animal where the female makes extra effort to get the male to stay with and provide for them and the k...

Re: Man and Woman's Evolution

You sound like you think that men and women evolved as two separate species. They could not have in fact evolved as two separate species because the men's and women's genes mix with each other to produce the offspring. Whatever the woman found attractive and worthwhile got mixed with whatever the m...

Re: Man and Woman's Evolution

I don't think keeping a man to provide for her is an 'evolutionary' trait of women, in the scientific sense. The need to make an extra effort to get the man to provide for her and her children wouldn't have existed for long enough for women to have evolved it(if it does exist to that extent at all,...

Re: Man and Woman's Evloution

Yeah that's true. I heard some where that when a woman is the breadwinner in a relationship, both sexes tend to feel less satisfied with the relationship. I also think that the increased interest in romantic love is a result of traditional sexual roles having less practical application in a technolo...

Man and Woman's Evolution

The question of woman's evolution is an interesting one in comparison with man's evolution, which appears much more straight forward. Quite simply, men had to be physically strong and cunning in order to provide food and shelter, whether it be by hunting and gathering or stealing and killing. Women ...

They aren't any more important. I'm just demonstrating that these analytic truths do very little in terms of useful information. You're god damn right they're useless! Like enlightenment, you may think you're in Nirvana, but you don't really know what your brain is doing behind the scenes. It doesn...

Neither do they negate the fact that our joints stiffen, senses dull, and breathing becomes harder as we turn into a weak and shriveled abomination of our former youth. So what? What you're talking about there is science, though. And neither science, nor analytic thinking can tell us what truly is ...

Re: Defining Truth

I don't understand how absolutes really do anything useful, they all seem trivial and many of them overly simple, to the point of inanity. Understanding how absolutes work is essential if you want to free your mind. But once you have accomplished this there's no reason to cherish or hold on to them...

Re: Defining Truth

My contention is that a prior reasoning, or the premises that comprise such reasoning's, are based on world experience. Take "all bachelors are married". Each word is defined by drawing from experiences, so there is an empirical component to all a priori truths. The logical framework behi...

Re: Jared Diamond: World's Worst Mistake?

Tribal mind set was likely: If your shaman says he summoned more animals for you to hunt, but your tribe still starves, it must be because the evil shaman of another tribe is driving the animals away from your hunters. (It can't be that your shaman is full of it.) Time to teach that evil tribe a le...

Re: Defining Truth

The dictionary says that it [empiricism] is knowledge derived from sense experience, which to me is not a satisfactory definition, because all knowledge is to some degree an invention, a definition, and yet, to some degree derived through the senses. Yes it is entirely arbitrary. So how did I come ...

I just wonder how this game he's playing is going to end. Will it continue hanging around in the background as a fringe of the republican party, slowly fade away, or is it going to continue to gain support and become a real political power. It will be interesting to see if any of those tea-party bac...

yes, but in so doing, it portrays women as being manipulators of men, a commonly held view around here... And while it's a given that women manipulate men and men manipulate women, both consciously and unconsciously, the viewpoint expressed in that piece is overly cynical(and one sided) from my per...

Re: Noam Chomsky on Mind/Body Problem

Chomsky, as insightful as he can be about social issues and the sciences, has never struck me as a sage or one who is conscious of absolute truth. This to me explains why he uses the methods and provides the explanations that he does about "the material v non-material" debate, of which the...

Strange you see it that way, because I would think that men, not women, would see it as the author spitting in their faces. It directly calls into question man's masculinity itself.
