Re: Beyond God and Evil

If God stopped us from learning by intervening so that we could never grab trucks and get sand thrown at us, we would forever remain just as those toddlers. According to you, then, we are capable of coming to behave in a godly way, (through learning). So it is possible . Now our definition of omnip...

Re: Beyond God and Evil

God is not omnipotent if an individual chooses to operate under a power other than God, You're talking about something different from what I'm talking about. There's no question that God is omnipotent because that's how I defined the scenario. I'm talking about the usual Christian type of god. Isn'...

Re: Beyond God and Evil

I'm not sure where you're coming from, actually. "Good" to me means, in general, "something beneficial". The degree of benefit doesn't matter as long as it's in the black. "Power" enters into the equation because for something beneficial to happen, there has to be a ch...

Re: Beyond God and Evil

Geez, Matt, are you serious or just playing with your navel? Maybe God isn't a fucking babysitter. And maybe we aren't fucking babies. Ever think of that? and later, So Matt says that we must answer as he has posed the scenario, because that is how he laid out the question. But the question is chil...

Re: Beyond God and Evil

The question of power cannot be asked in the same domain as the question of evil. So it's a basic category error. Well, think about this because I think this is the crux of the whole thing: If some evil is going to happen and someone has knowledge of it and the power to stop it but he just doesn't ...

Re: Beyond God and Evil

The only logically consistent way to maintain all three attributes (omnipotence, omniscience, always-doing-good) at once is to say that the way things actually turn out is the best possible way that they could have turned out. Yeah, that's actually a good solution to the problem. I can't think of a...

Beyond God and Evil

Let's assume that God is all-powerful, all-knowing, that everything he does is good and let's ask the question: why do bad things happen? For the sake of discussion let's take the killing of millions of Jews by the Nazis. If God is all-powerful, then does he do everything himself and thus kill the J...

Re: The tetris effect

Ryan, No, the price is high for an item only because the demand is high. If the supply is kept low for whatever reason, then that increases the demand which increases the price. We are talking about two totally different things. I’m saying that a Lexus is more expensive than a ford focus because it ...

Re: The tetris effect

You’re analysis is dead wrong here Sue, generally speaking, most expensive goods are higher because demand is lower for them, they are a luxury item, and they are usually a little higher quality than the generic brand that almost everyone can afford. A higher quality product costs more than a lower...

I'm just saying it's silly to think that every single job is beneficial to the human race.

The tetris effect

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tetris_effect If you do something repetitive for a long time, your mind will start to fall into a pattern that will make you think of that thing automatically after you stop doing it. I guess some people have labeled this the "Tetris Effect", after people who p...

For time to have had a beginning there would have to be a time before time where the present didn't exist. But how can there be time before time and how can the present not exist? It's silly.

Henids arise in any situation where you are learning new things. Like when you're reading something and come across a new word or phrase that the author hasn't defined. You might have a vague inkling of what it might mean, but you can't pinpoint the exact meaning.

I said plainly that the objective world of people beating up on each other is real. To deny the objective world is solipsism: a ridiculous philosophy purely on the "grounds" (or lack thereof) of disembodied metaphysical minds creating subjective fantasies in total denial of what their non...

Matt: "You need to think about what creation is. The belief that something can be created out of nothing is false." First, I don't see the elevance of this statement to the argument against solipsism presented. In fact, I am arguing that my fist, the solipsist's face and the pain of impac...

I am not speculating when I say you are "causing" your experience. You are choosing it. This may not be the "you" that you know yourself to be in your thoughts, but it is you, nonetheless. This I cannot explain to be satisfactory to you, but I can say I am not speculating. It al...
