Re: Enlightenment

For me, enlightenment is the realization of one's true nature as opposed to how we conventionally view ourselves and our place in the world. In other words, enlightenment is the complementary opposite of ignorance.

Re: A love letter

Transcendent Lovers One that is never alone, Two that are never apart, Alternating to and fro, Apprehending and accumulating, Never abating. One that is real, One that is merely apparent, Flowing in and out, Initiating and completing, Never regressing. One that is timeless, One that is time itself,...

Re: Contradiction in the Law of Identity

What makes you think I need you to explain them to me? I said you failed to demonstrate them. That fact that you believe that a self-evident principle, such as the Law of Identity, requires a demonstration tells me that you don't understand it. Furthermore, no logical demonstration is possible with...

Re: Contradiction in the Law of Identity

The Law of Excluded Middle states: “that everything must either be or not be”, No, it doesn't "state" that "everything must either be or not be". It's stats a LAW about non-contradiction ; a thing cannot be what it is and what it is not at the same time . It's about what you say...

Re: Contradiction in the Law of Identity

Because the Law of Identity decrees that each thing must have a definite set of characteristics, The Law of Identity says that a thing is what it is and not something else. I see that you have only a cursory understanding of the Law of Identity and do not recognize it when expressed in different wo...

Re: Contradiction in the Law of Identity

My argument is that only those things that are possessed of their own intrinsic causes (i,e,. properties) may be rightfully called “things-in-themselves”. Well, I disagree. I think you've been making a lot of assertions without presenting the supporting arguments. So, let's just stick to the above....

Re: Contradiction in the Law of Identity

If I tell you that I am in possession of a vehicle that has two wheels mounted one behind the other, a handle bar, a saddle seat, and is propelled by the action of a rider’s feet upon pedals, you will immediately recognize that I am speaking of a “bicycle”, for I have expressed the essential charac...

Re: Contradiction in the Law of Identity

Jehu , One of us is terribly confused, I think. The Law of the Excluded Middle is precisely the law that you are violating, here: As I said before, the “self” is that aspect of a thing that is real and that underlies its appearance or manifestation; in other words, it is the cause of the appearance...

Re: Contradiction in the Law of Identity

for having two wheels is an essential characteristic of that thing we call a bicycle; the term "bicycle" being the linguistic identity of that particular kind of thing. So you have here a "bikeness" quality? The ideal bike shape with at least two circular wheely things. In lingu...

the essential characteristics of a thing are equivalent with its defining characteristics. What is essential about them? If I define some characteristics at some point, at which point do they become "essential of that thing". You imply I cannot modify or change any of these essentials wit...

Re: Contradiction in the Law of Identity

How can the essence of Thing A arise " merely as a set of qualities in the mind " of Thing B and be considered as the essence of Thing A at the same time? Philosophical essentialism is not an ontological doctrine, as so many have wrongfully supposed it to be, but a phenomenological one, f...

The chairness of...

Re: Contradiction in the Law of Identity

I disagree with that last sentence. It's not hard to describe how something is physically real. It is more likely that some philosophers will ignore the examples. On what logical grounds do you assert that physical things are real? How exactly are you defining the term "real"? For if you ...

Re: Contradiction in the Law of Identity

Ok. Can you explain to me, 1) the difference between "the essence of a thing is that set of perceptible characteristics that are essential to the thing's being what it is " and the "thing in itself", and 2) how this difference arises? Simply put, the “self” of a thing is that wh...

Re: Contradiction in the Law of Identity

I think that if you eliminate "to be" from a piece of writing, you will not only discover its dispensability, you will find that the writing attunes more closely with the thought/intended meaning, thus enhanced transmission and reception. The absence amplifies. I believe that you will fin...

Re: Contradiction in the Law of Identity

Dropping pronouns and the verb "to be" from the transmission also advances the intent of precision. Because of the powerful link entwining language and thought, a series of "to be" descriptions will encourage perception of memory-based habits rather than perception of what is. &...

I don't think I will ever understand it. None of the English makes sense to me. I think I'll just invent my own version of Enlightenment. Pincho's Enlightenment.. no poetry allowed. Re: Contradiction in the Law of Identity

A is A can be the only foundation of any intelligent discourse. If the intelligent sphere has no terms on which it can agree then all further discourse is useless. If A (subject) cannot be exclusively claimed to be A (predicate) then there is nothing to discuss further - any term and landmark can b...
