Re: The enlightenment quiz
Having been specifically requested to come back to answer this thread: 1. Emotions are: C. what you feel when you don't have any beer (though I confess to occasionally becoming horribly emotional when I have too much beer) 2. A "thing" is best defined as: B. an object, entity, quality, con...

Re: Is there an ideology of knowledge?
Is a position of "checkmate" preferable to a random arrangement of chess pieces? What God has told you the "right" way to arrange the chess board of life? You arrange it however YOU like, whatever YOU value, but to claim that this is anything more than having it your way instead...

Wait! No, I get it. The board gets the utility from you no longer having a queen because it no longer has to support her weight.

Re: Is there an ideology of knowledge?
Similarly, if I take your queen for a pawn, this is a zero-sum equation because that pawn might have become valuable to me later in the game. You don't know what utility I had for that pawn!!!

Re: Cui Bono?
My personal most direct encounter with what you call 'materialistic culture'? My family pushing me to get a PhD. Not to earn $$$, but to get a higher degree, even though PhD is actually associated with a drop in earning capacity vs. Master's degree. Do you have a link for that? Everything I had see...

By the act of asking you to rape her, it is not rape, but role play. Big difference.

Re: sexual aggression
So, following this logic again, if say, we were to suggest that the suffering of a rich guy who got robbed was partly his responsibility because of his own valuations, why can't we say that to women who are raped? Does a rich man invite theft because he's rich (I guess he might if he got there by t...

Unfortunately for whatever sex life you've had, you haven't learned that girls like NASTY. End of discussion. maybe the fact that you think all women like rough sex and the study Vic showed about women on the bridge/danger making people more attractive are linked? Women need danger to make you even...

The herd behavior of Nat, Philo and...... Victor? Yep, I can see that group getting together and deciding to go lynch someone who didn't completely deserve it. I think this thread wins for most disturbing Genius thread ever. Somewhere along the lines, I think you've lost the line between fantasy and...

Though Dan can't get all the blame. How many men do we have reading this thread and only Philo and Laird (neither of whom "fit in" with the philosophy preached here) have commented on it?

Sorry, what? Who was "shunning having a bit of fun?" I wish I could avoid being "the ass" here, but why solving such a problem would be important escapes me. While you have every right to determine the criteria by which one might earn your intellectual respect, I guess I'd have ...

Re: Is this possible?
Certainly the former administrators of the board where this fine thread is found can't be shunning having a bit of fun on a message board? This thread was originally in the science and math forum, until Kevin dumped all those threads into here, so it did make a bit more sense in that context. But, n...

They serve the same purpose as sudoku puzzles and crosswords. Things to do to pass time that aren't "watch TV" or "sit on internet" There's nothing wrong with them anymore than there's something wrong with watching a movie.

Re: The Psychopath Test
But you see, it's not about giving humanity knowledge. It's about knowledge itself, atomically. It just so happens that both Prometheus and Lucifer gave it to people, but that's not the pattern, that's purely incidental. Wait, I think I just had two half-thoughts that combined in a weird way to not...

Re: The Psychopath Test
Whether you count it as wisdom or knowledge is secondary. IMO it's all related -- just different aspects of the same thing; I see wisdom as being able to apply knowledge with honesty (intellectual honesty), which itself is a form of knowledge, i.e. knowledge of one's self. Furthermore, Odin sacrifi...

yeah, Katy had come the closest to getting it on her own. And you didn't miss Forethought, you go that. You missed Venus. Actually, my biggest problem was since I'd always learned Odin received wisdom, rather than knowledge (the ability to use runes as opposed to just the knowledge of them) the con...

Re: Race, gender, sexual orientation, intelligence, what else?
One could. one would then still have to contend with the fact that we picked a fairly arbitrary groupings of characteristics in order to delineate races. We picked geographical and cultural differences, then started identifying physical characteristics that showed the differences between these area...
