Re: Existence of a mathematical abstraction

analog57 wrote:All possible existences are real in the platonic sense - being abstractions which are independent of the physical universe.
Ideas considered in such a way - as independent of the physical universe - are not real. They are imaginary.

Robot Receptionist

I wonder when they will become cost effective enough to take the place of office receptionists. I doubt that it is that far down the road. Faizi How much does a receptionist make? I'm thinking it would be cost effective if it costs, say, less than three years salary. Assuming they break down less o...

Re: Existence of a mathematical abstraction

Every set of numbers exists eternally as a mathematical abstraction independent of the physical universe. What does "exists" mean in this context? Yes, the law of identity... You miss the point. A set of numbers "exists" as a mathematical abstraction, which is different from the...

[quote="Dave Toast"]Red pill or blue? [quote] Indeed. This certainly seems like some classic paranoia at first read: http://www.arcticbeacon.com/articles/article/1518131/30199.htm I mean, it has a lot of the classic elements - persecution by the government, an evil plot, hypnosis, and so o...

In the News

This relates to a discussion several months back, about the possible eventual "Stepford Wives" scenario of replacing women with robots.

Equating truth with an emotion seems like a really bad idea, from the standpoint of truth.

Re: WTC Collapse

I do not think that Bush is smart enough to conspire. I think 9/11 was just a lucky break for him politically. I mostly agree. But if he knew of such a plan, and would benefit him politically (like help him get re-elected), would he try to stop it? I think it is possible that he had his timeline mi...

I'm not a mechanical engineer, but intuitively, it seems that like it would be designed to not collapse, rather than be designed to collapse in a certain way.

WTC Collapse

Getting away of the details of what did or did not happen in the WTC collapse, yesterday the thought occurred to me: so what? What if it could be proven, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that the U.S. government was involved - either caused or deliberately allowed the events of 9/11 to happen? I don't th...

This is pretty obvious in the U.S. It's classic doublethink. Something done by the enemy is terrorism, but if we do something similar, it is completely justified.

Re: Animal language

Animal communication, much like our interpretation of music, is a language. Instead of words and inflection, animals rely purely on the inflection of sound to convey their message. Some animals do, some don't. Some animals use body language rather than sound. For example, the Australian bearded dra...

Re: WTC Collapse

I saw a TV show about this and, IIRC, they said the towers are built to collapse downwards instead of toppling over. They are built over a cylindrical structure that collapses like a squeezebox. I haven't seen anything that mentions that on the Web. What I've read is that it was built around a stee...

WTC Collapse

Yes, I am still thinking about this, dammit. If there were, in fact, explosives in the WTC that caused the collapse - rather than the collapses being caused by the planes hitting the buildings - that does not in itself point toward our governement or terrorists. Terrorists could have planted the bom...

Titles are for herd animals.

Raw human nature is pretty nasty. It needs a LOT of taming. I think this all fits in the "sub-human animal" category of behavior. Right. You are not properly "human" until you have learned quite a few things. Infants take quite a while before they can do even very basic things l...

I DO NOT EXISTS!. You have to understand "I do not exists". Well, unknown, a question for you. It looks like English is not your primary language. It isn't clear whether the odd grammatical structure of "I do not exists" is deliberate or not. Do you mean something by it, or is i...

I’d like to play “herd’s advocate” for a bit here. but when normal people, herd people, do things like teach a child to shake hands, they're not thinking along the lines of "Oh man! This kid needs to learn how to be a better part of the herd!" What they're thinking is, "This k...
