Re: Ontological Perception
That's like saying that because birds fly and they are part of the Totality, the flying of birds is the flying of the Totality, therefore the Totality flies. It's not exactly a wrong thing to say but saying that would be kind of weird!

Re: Ontological Perception
By that logic I can't be aware of my own awareness, since awareness can't be anything other than itself.

You're on the wrong forum. Go Google for "Babbage's Method".

This: {url=http://www.onlineopinion.com.au/view.asp?article=1376}a link like this{/url} should create a link like this if you replace the curly brackets with square brackets. P.S. make sure that &...

Re: Complexeosities
No, I meant that the process that creates the AI doesn't have much to do with the amount complexity it can simulate. The problems solvable by modern computer technology can be as complex as you want if you devote enough resources to it.

Re: Algorithms
What Penrose proposes is that AI will never be able to match the complexity of the human mind You mean it will never be able to match to process that occurs in the human brain? Because you said "complexity" but then started talking about the process of the brain, but that doesn't have muc...

Re: I think, therefore I think that I am thinking
http://www.amazon.com/exec/-etc Just a little rant first: could we make a rule or something that says people have to use URL tags so links don't mess with the wrapping of the page? I think that link should have looked something like this: amazon.com I was thinking that the process of finding an ans...

Re: best book
I'm not sure that looking at literary works in a hierarchical way benefits anyone. Who is it that is making such judgements? A wise person? Obviously not. If something resonates with you and inspires you then it is worthwhile. Well, maybe "best" was a little extreme, but I think it's at l...

Re: best book
Matt Gregory Poison for the Heart is ...probably the best book on wisdom in existence today. Do you think the author agrees with you? The artist in him does probably. I'm not sure about the sage in him. Why do you put it above Mr Quinn's book? Just for balance. Plus, Solway's book was more earth-sh...

Ok. Thanks for the replies, I did read them all but I asked a different question than I really meant to ask. I don't know if I can explain it, but I'm trying to figure out the precise boundary between what is pure logic and what is not. Kind of tough because anything you could think of has both a lo...

Poison for the Heart is a mish-mash of mostly crap. No way, PFTH might be a disorganized mish-mash, but it's not crap. It's probably the best book on wisdom in existence today. I actually think the disorganization is one its strengths. It makes a lot of seemingly trivial points, but every point mad...

Mathematical Logic
Around here we often say that 1+1=2 is a statement of pure logic, but I'm not so sure that it really is. When I looked up "addition" in the dictionary, the relevant entry said "the process of adding". "Add" means "to calculate a total". "Total" means...

I don't know if anyone noticed, but right after I made that post, the database on the other end decided to take a snooze and I couldn't access the board (not sure how long it was down, though, since I went to bed). That's another great example of why science should be banned. Although I'm joking whe...

If it could stimulate us into understanding ourselves better that would be a more worthwhile product of quantum mechanics than using it to create some new gadget that we can strap on our wrist and receive instant message with or whatever. That theory of Ecob's is pretty damn silly, though. I can't b...

Re: Bell test
Well, I'm trying to understand this EPR paradox and the Bell test experiments, but they don't explain very much about the test. Why do they shoot the particles in opposite directions? Why not the same direction? Why do they think that the apparatus that produces the particles has no effect on the p...

Re: Quantum
Saying that quantum particles really are in different places at the same time is a long way from talking about "possibilities". Oh, you mean it's a long way from talking about particles being in different possible places at the same time. Gotcha. They probably wanted to spice it up a litt...

Hey, Anyone seen 'What The *Bleep* Do We Know?' Yes, it's one of the worst, most mindless things I've seen in a long time. Hey now, I thought it was good! It was a lot better than Dancing With Wolves! The script often contradicts itself from one sentence to the next. For example, one moment they ar...

Re: WTC Collapse
I saw a TV show about this and, IIRC, they said the towers are built to collapse downwards instead of toppling over. I'm not a mechanical engineer, but intuitively, it seems that like it would be designed to not collapse , rather than be designed to collapse in a certain way. Well, you know. There ...

How are you making the distinction between "to" and "within" the herd, then? I'll use the handshake as an example. When someone sticks out their hand, it triggers certain reactions within us. We may think that the person wants to shake our hand. We might realize the person accep...
