Re: The Universe: Intelligent?
It's a simple problem: define intelligence. It is a relative value/thing? Define Nature: it is a relative value/thing? etc etc..... Thinking 101 chaps. Intelligence is a relative term. I agree with you. Basically one compares a person's abilities to those of the majority. In this context, intellige...

Only if the judges and courts believed you! To a certain extend I am glad they don't.

Re: Dialectics 101
For your amusement value: I was talking to a student at my school who had taken a philosophy course last semester. He listed the people he studied as "Hegel, Kant, Heidiegger" ...and had never heard the word dialectics. Sometimes I wonder. Dialectics was a type of argumentation used by th...

Re: Special Relativity
Divide and conquer. You are considering too many things at once. Leave out words like "speed", "constants", "runs", etc.. These are words related to time. Describing time with such words is a fallacy - circular reasoning. Think of how time is measured. You should realiz...

Re: The Universe: Intelligent?
The universe is at least as intelligent as you or I. We are both part of it.
The distinction between nature and humans is arbitrary. You are as much nature as nature is you.

Re: The Key to Freethought
Freedom or independence is perhaps the third highest good a man can achieve - be it in thought or any other form. What are the higher goods? Truth would be the highest good a man can possess. Perhaps followed by justice/harmony. And then freedom/independence or moderation. Why? Because it is imposs...

Re: Absolutes and language
Gentlemen I think you are missing something very basic. Namely, you are a part of the universe yourself. I would make a bold move and say that the universe is "expressing" you at this very moment. Said differently, the universe is your context and contrast. (Perhaps context=empirical world...

Things are always becoming. You can think of the universe as an AI program that constantly modifies itself to no particular end.

Re: The Key to Freethought
There seems to be a heavy price for free-thought. But what about the cost of not having free thought? Is that not greater? A philosophical approach. Nice! Freedom or independence is perhaps the third highest good a man can achieve - be it in thought or any other form. So I agree with you. All I did...

Re: The Key to Freethought
It's not about being perfectly honest. There really is no way to tell if you're being perfectly honest. Mainly, it's about knowing what will make you feel "satisfied," though that's not exactly the right word. The only way to do that is by being honest with yourself, by not denying choice...

.... is to remove everything that blocks or hampers thought. - Most beliefs hamper thought. If you believe something is true, you are not likely to examine it further. (Think of Ptolemy's belief that the earth was the center of the universe.) Most of our true beliefs are false. See Descartes Medita...

It was Plato who claimed we are born with full knowledge. However, as we grow old we forget that knowledge. The way to get it back is by self-reflection.
See Plato's Meno @ http://classics.mit.edu/Plato/meno.html
One thing you should know is that for Plato, Virtue is Knowledge.

Re: Isn't death more wonderful than life!
Death is a change. Its natural. Just like the seasons. We should celebrate, rather than grief, natural death.
If celebration is too much, then at least we should not grief.
We have lost nothing, because nothing was given to us. Therefore I see no point in grieving.

Re: The Key to Freethought
What do you mean by free-thought? Surely you don't mean a thought with no price, right? Perhaps by free-though you mean: an original thought or an original idea. Whatever you mean, I highly doubt that honesty has anything to do with it. And I presume when you talk about honesty you mean "honest...
