Re: What is Time?
Steven, requiring a relationship to survive does not necessarily create that illusion. You could have dependency in a finite system, or with simply nothing changing. I would think the idea of all existent matter concurrently existing relative to one another would touch more on gravity rather than ti...

Re: What is Time?
By "continous of the present moment" are you implying that there is only one "moment" or continum that our minds divide into "past" "present" and "future"? Or something else altogether? that is interesting. I would say that it is a continuous stream...

Re: Death
Trevor, Unless you know that you can accurately decide whether or not there is an afterlife, the problem should not be approached. I never claimed to be approaching it as a solveable problem. I merely described as an something I would do sitting out on my porch at night, passing the time. what's wro...

Re: Death
If there is no reason to choose either option, flipping a coin does not provide an answer. There are other things to think about than the afterlife, and substantial reason not to think that the problem of the afterlife is solveable. Why waste your time on an impossible question? I didn't say flip a...

do you know what the idea is called or have any links. I'd like to read more about it.Trevor Salyzyn wrote:I'm surprised nobody has commented on this yet. I'll give it a few more hours, because I honestly don't want to waltz into this territory.

Re: Death
I find it interesting how the atheists really want some sort of final knowledge that there is absolutely no afterlife, whereas the fundamentalists want to know for sure that there is an afterlife. Psychologically speaking, it seems like a similar psychological dynamic, namely both want some sort of...

I'm pretty sure I read something about an idea in quantum mechanics that says things can happen without causes....Jehu wrote:for a thing cannot arise without a cause, nor out of a cause that merely relative.

Re: Speakers Corner
your example is good, definitely reflective of a concept, but how does it relate to this thread? The idea of practically infinite possibilities and knowing which one to choose....lots of times choosing the wrong one, looking back and understanding. foresight and prudence in life. However, digression...

Re: Absolute truth
Oh, simple, because to claim that there are no absolute truths is self-contradictory. Look: If there are no absolute truths then absolutely nothing is absolute, with no exceptions - or, everything is subjective, always, without any exceptions. But if this holds true always in all cases and without ...

Re: Speakers Corner
Why interpret life as a game? How do you know you've chosen the right action, when the selection is so unlimited? If you are who I think you are, you have the wrong idea...Look who's jumping to conclusions? first of all, I'm not who you think I am. Second I wasn't interpreting life as merely a game...

Re: Speakers Corner
I think it is understanding in a sense. I find myself continually replaying events that have already happened, analyzing, finding something new each time, which gets me closer to understanding the underlying cause or principle. As I write this I have a game of chess going on - it is near the end and...
